Get closer to the light. As close as possible without being in-frame give the best results. This gives the light a chance to wrap around you. Unless you WANT the dark shadows. And if the background is at an angle to the camera and the light, it can be made to fade from light to dark. Nice!
With your large umbrella, you can position yourself directly between your model and the umbrella. When done right, this can produce some rather nice effects, wildly exaggerated here. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jpn/5491490031/
